Root Canal Treatment
A root canal treatment is a procedure that removes the infected dental pulp inside the tooth. Your tooth may become infected or damaged by:
- Decay
- Wear and tear
- An injury
- A crack in your tooth
- Gum disease
- Cracked fillings
- Repeated dental work that can injure the dental pulp
Root canal treatments often have a bad reputation and are feared by many patients, however, when in safe hands at Minto Family Dental there is nothing to worry about.
the treatment is done in 3 stages:
Stage 1: Extirpation - this is the first clean which is done to limit bacterial infection. The area is numbed and your dentist will make a sample opening in the tooth and use files to clean out the canal. The tooth is rinsed with an antibacterial solution and a temporary filling is put on top.
Stage 2: Instrumentation - This step will either be performed on the same day as stage 1 or a few weeks later. This is another cleaning step but more thorough, it is done to ensure all bacteria are eliminated to prevent reinfection, your dentist will take more x-rays to confirm the tooth is clean of infection.
Stage 3: Obturation - This is the final step, your dentist will rinse the tooth with an antibacterial solution and dry it, rubber points are placed in the root canal to fill it and then sealed. Depending on the case either a temporary or permanent cap will be placed on top.
Benefits of a root canal treatment include:
- Allows you to keep your natural tooth
- Your tooth should no longer give you pain
- Quick and cost-effective
